PRESS RELEASE on the results of the IPV Solo Competition and the IPV Symposium Detmold 2019
1 first prize, 2 second and 2 third prizes at the "IPV Solo Competition": Almost 180 trombonists came to the symposium in Detmold.
The international trombone symposium on Sunday in Detmold ended extremely successfully and with a great response from the public. Almost 180 trombonists from all over the world accepted the invitation of the International Trombone Association (IPV) and the Hochschule für Musik Detmold. For the second time, the "IPV Solo Competition" took place at the Detmold Musikhochschule as part of the IPV Symposium from 4 to 6 March. 59 young trombone soloists from 13 countries presented themselves to an international jury. The first prizes in the tenor trombone category and in the bass trombone category each consisted of a high-quality instrument from a renowned manufacturer, and all prize winners had the opportunity to perform solo at the IPV Symposium 2019 as part of a soloist concert.
The young Englishman Kris Garfitt won in the tenor trombone category. With the "Conn-Selmer-Prize" he now received a new, individually adapted tenor trombone of the brand "Conn" worth several thousand Euros. The second prize in the tenor trombone category went to Pierrick Caboche, the third to 17-year-old Polina Tarasenko from the Ukraine, who, like Kris Garfitt, took advantage of the opportunity to perform solo at the soloist concert on Friday. Both of them thrilled the audience especially with their playing.
No first prize was awarded in the bass trombone category. But a second prize to the young Israeli Noam Greenfeld and the third prize to Thomas Bousquie from France.
The members of the jury were Prof. Jiggs Whigham (Chairman, USA, D), Prof. Chris Houlding (GB, D), Prof. Jacques Mauger (F, CH), Prof. Jamie Williams (USA, D), Prof. Christian Sprenger (D), Vincenzo Paratore (I), Csaba Wagner (Basspos., H), Tomer Maschkowski (Basspos., D).
First prize winner of the competition:
Englishman Kris Garfitt graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and after his audition in 2016 joined the German Radio Philharmonic in Saarbrücken, where he has been employed as a trombonist ever since. He has also won several first prizes at prestigious international competitions and, in addition to his service with the Radiophilharmonie, has performed with many of Europe's largest orchestras conducted by the world's best conductors.
